There are some weeks in Key West that just feel different. The energy is contagious, the streets are buzzing, and everywhere you turn, there's something exciting happening.
For me, Powerboat Race Week is one of those weeks!
From November 1 through 8, 2026, the 45th Annual Race World Offshore Key West World Championship, presented by XINSURANCE, returns to the waters surrounding our little island. Some of the world's most impressive offshore racing boats and teams will be competing for championship honors, and Key West becomes the place to be for racing fans, boating enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys a great island celebration.
And this year is particularly special for Key West Ted. More on that in a minute!
🏁 How Do the Key West Powerboat Races Actually Work?
If you've never experienced offshore powerboat racing, you're in for something pretty spectacular.
Unlike racing on a traditional track, these boats compete on open water. That means they're dealing with more than just the other competitors. Wind, waves, changing water conditions, and navigating tight turns all play a role.
Some boats can reach speeds exceeding 140 mph, and certain classes are capable of even higher speeds. The racecourse winds through Key West Harbor and surrounding waters, giving spectators some incredible opportunities to watch the action from shore.
Different boats, different classes
One of the biggest questions I hear is why all the boats don't race together.
The simple answer? They're not all built the same!
Offshore racing includes different classes based on factors such as boat design, engine specifications, performance limits, and competition rules.
Here are some of the classes you may see:
Class 1: Some of the most powerful and technologically advanced offshore racing boats.
Super Cat: High performance catamarans built for exciting competition.
Super Stock: A competitive class of catamarans operating under more standardized equipment rules.
Super Vee: Powerful boats featuring the traditional V shaped hull design.
Bracket Classes: Boats competing within designated performance categories and speed limits.
Think of it like auto racing. You wouldn't necessarily put every type of race car into the same competition. Offshore racing follows a similar philosophy.
And that is part of the fun! Throughout the day, you'll see different styles of boats, racing strategies, and speeds.
For detailed regulations, visit the World Powerboat Racing Association rules and resources.
Why 3 race days matter
The championship features 3 major racing days:
Wednesday, November 4: Truman Waterfront Cup
Friday, November 6: Southernmost Continental Championship
Sunday, November 8: Conch Republic Championship Finale
The championship format rewards performance across the event, meaning consistency, mechanical reliability, and strategy are critical.
A team can have an incredible boat, but if something goes wrong early in the week, they may spend the remaining days working to recover.
That's why I love the Sunday finale. By then, teams know exactly where they stand, what they need to accomplish, and how hard they can push their equipment.
It's not simply about having the fastest boat. It's about putting together a championship performance.

One of the things that makes Key West such a fantastic location for this championship is that you don't necessarily need to be on a boat to experience the excitement.
Truman Waterfront and the Outer Mole
The center of the racing experience. The Outer Mole offers dedicated spectator viewing, with general admission currently advertised around $25 per race day. It's an excellent choice for getting close to the excitement. OR go all out and get pampered with the XINSURANCE VIP Package!
Mallory Square and Sunset Pier
Both offer waterfront perspectives of the racing action. Mallory Square has public viewing areas, while Sunset Pier offers reserved viewing opportunities during the championship.
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park
A beautiful setting for enjoying the island while catching portions of the offshore action. State park admission applies.

🐓 Keep Your Eyes on Boat #443! Key West Ted Is Back!
Now for the part that has me especially excited!
For the 2nd consecutive year, the Key West Ted logo will be racing aboard Boat #443!
The boat is owned by Mike Flammia, owner of Stone Soup Gallery & Frame Shop in Key West and Framed Offshore Racing.
And this year, the team has a major sponsor that should make plenty of locals smile.
With Smokin' Tuna reopening this year, having such a popular Key West establishment as a major sponsor brings another level of excitement to the team.
I love seeing local businesses supporting each other, especially during an event that attracts so much international attention to our little island.
I'll also be participating in the opening boat parade, so keep an eye out for me!
Here's my challenge to you:
If you spot Boat #443 during the parade, in the pits, or out on the water, take a photo and tag @KeyWestTed!
I'd love to see the boat through your eyes and share some of those moments throughout the week.
Who knows, you might even catch a KWT rooster along the way! 🐓 (We will be throwing swag items from the boat on November 1st parade!! )
🎉 What to Do Between the Races: The Key West Race Week Party Scene
Here's something that first time visitors may not realize.
Race Week isn't just about the racing!
The boats may be the main attraction, but the celebrations around town are a huge part of the experience.
Some of the best moments happen when the engines are off, the teams are relaxing, and everyone is enjoying the Key West atmosphere.
A few events to look for this year include:
The organizers maintain a dedicated 2026 Key West Race Week party schedule with event details and updates.
And don't overlook the Historic Seaport, live music venues, waterfront restaurants, and the smaller gatherings happening throughout Old Town.
Sometimes those unplanned Key West moments become the best memories.
