Living in Key West: What It’s Really Like

A practical local guide to daily life, essential services, and the places that make island living work
April 16, 2026

The dream is real, but daily life matters

A lot of people picture Key West as sunshine, cocktails, and sunsets. That part is true, but living here full time is about much more than vacation moments. The real test is whether your daily routine works. Can you grab groceries easily, find your go to coffee spot, get to the gym, take the dog out, and handle practical things like water, electric, and healthcare without stress? That is where Key West either becomes a fantasy or starts to feel like home.

The good news is that Key West works surprisingly well once you learn your rhythm. It is compact, walkable in many areas, and full of local businesses that become part of your everyday life very quickly.

Start with the places you will actually use every week

If you are going to live here, you need more than a pretty street and a pool. You need the spots that keep life moving.

For groceries, Fausto’s is one of the most useful local staples because it has 2 convenient locations right in town, Fleming Street and White Street. Fausto’s has been serving Key West since 1926, which says a lot about how deeply rooted it is in the community. For more affordable and convenient options, there is always Winn Dixie and Publix, both of which are easy and reliable for everyday needs.

Coffee matters more than people admit when they are deciding where to live, and Key West has places that become part of your routine fast. Cuban Coffee Queen has multiple Key West locations and offers online ordering and pickup. Baby’s Coffee is another local favorite and continues to grow its presence, now making it even easier to work into your daily routine. These are the places that work whether you are starting your day, meeting someone casually, or grabbing something quick before errands or heading out on the water.

The lifestyle feels casual, but routine is everything

One of the biggest differences between visiting Key West and living in Key West is that residents build habits around convenience. That usually means finding a part of town where daily movement feels easy. Some people want to walk to coffee, restaurants, and the harbor. Others want easier parking, a little more breathing room, or quicker access to New Town conveniences.

This is why I tell people not to shop by price alone. Shop by rhythm. Think about where you want to grab coffee on a Tuesday, where you will shop for dinner, whether you want to bike to the water, and how often you want to get in the car. In Key West, the right location changes how the entire property feels. That matters just as much as bedroom count or square footage.

Health, fitness, and getting outside are part of island life

For a lot of people, moving here is supposed to improve quality of life, not just change scenery. That means access to places that help you stay active and get outdoors.

Old Town Fitness is a well known local gym at 1010 Truman Avenue and has a vibe of how Key West used to feel. For dog owners and anyone who wants easy access to open space, Higgs Beach is one of the most practical outdoor areas on the island, plus it has a restaurant as an extra bonus on the beach. The City of Key West lists Higgs Beach as having a dog park along with playgrounds, picnic areas, tennis courts, volleyball courts, showers, and beach amenities.

That may sound simple, but this is exactly the kind of detail that shapes whether island life feels easy. A house can be beautiful, but if your daily routine does not work, the lifestyle can fall short of what you imagined.

The practical side of island living is where local guidance matters

Living on an island has real logistics, and buyers should understand that early. Water service is handled by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority. Electric service is through Keys Energy Services.

City Hall is another important resource that often gets overlooked. This is where residents handle things like annual residential parking stickers, permits, and general city related questions. If you are planning to live here full time, this becomes part of your routine sooner than you might expect.

Healthcare access is another question buyers ask, especially those making a full time move or planning longer stays. Lower Keys Medical Center is located on Stock Island. Remember that there is a main hospital's number but also a physician referral line as well.

These are the details that turn a move into a smooth transition.

What surprises most people about living here

The biggest surprise is usually not the weather or the water. It is how quickly the island starts to feel personal.

Your grocery store is no longer just a grocery store. Your coffee stop becomes part of your morning. The gym knows your face. The beach becomes part of your weekly routine. The town gets smaller in the best possible way.

That is what makes Key West different. It is not just a destination. It is a real community with daily patterns and local connections. If you understand that before you buy, you will enjoy the move a lot more.

My advice if you are thinking about living in Key West

Before you buy, spend a few days living like a resident. Go to Fausto’s. Grab coffee from Cuban Coffee Queen or Baby’s Coffee. Drive or bike the route you would actually take each day. See how close you are to the beach, the gym, and the services you will really use.

Stop by City Hall or give them a call and ask questions about insurance, flood zones, parking, permits, and anything else that impacts daily life.

A smart Key West purchase is not just about finding a beautiful home. It is about finding a home that fits the way you want to live on this island.

And as you are figuring all of this out, just remember, not every real estate experience is the same. Having the right team behind you makes a real difference. Who you work with matters.
