Who Is Key West Ted? The Story Behind the Rooster

From Engineering to Island Life, the Key West Citizen Shares the Story Behind the Brand
May 11, 2026

Most people know me as “Key West Ted.”

The sunsets.
The rooster logo.
The island photos.
The real estate posts.
The random street chickens wandering through Old Town.

But recently, the Key West Citizen took a deeper look into the story behind the brand, and honestly, it means a lot to be featured by a paper that has been part of this community for generations.

Because while real estate is certainly part of what I do, the bigger story has always been about something else entirely:

Building a life around community, storytelling, and a genuine love for this island.

The Journey Started Long Before Real Estate

Before Key West, my wife and I spent years traveling, working, and building careers in engineering.

On paper, everything looked successful.

But somewhere along the way, we started asking ourselves a question that many people eventually ask:

Is this really the life we want?

Then COVID happened, and like many people, it forced us to slow down and reevaluate everything.

We suddenly realized we had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world.

And surprisingly, every path somehow kept leading us back to Key West.

That was the moment everything changed.

Why Key West Felt Different

There are beautiful places everywhere.

But Key West has something deeper than scenery.

It is the people.
The culture.
The creativity.
The individuality.
The feeling that life here is meant to actually be lived.

The Key West Citizen article touched on this idea perfectly when describing how the island became more than simply a place to live. It became part of my identity.

And honestly, that is true.

This island has a way of changing people.

How Engineering Still Shapes My Business Today

One of the biggest misconceptions about real estate is that it is only about sales.

For me, it has always been about strategy.

My engineering background taught me how to:

  • Analyze problems logically
  • Study trends and data carefully
  • Think several steps ahead
  • Stay calm under pressure
  • Focus on systems, timing, and execution

That mindset became a huge advantage when transitioning into real estate.

As mentioned in the article, I take a very data driven approach to pricing, market exposure, and positioning listings effectively from the beginning.

Because in Key West, details matter.

The Story Behind “Key West Ted”

The funny thing is, I never sat down and tried to “create a brand.”

At first, I simply started sharing the things I genuinely loved:

  • Historic homes
  • Local bars and restaurants
  • Sunsets
  • Boats drifting through the harbor
  • Architecture
  • Community events
  • Everyday island moments

Over time, people connected with it.

Eventually I realized people were not just following along for real estate.

They wanted to understand the lifestyle itself.

That completely changed how I viewed my role in this business.

Beyond The Listings

One of my favorite lines from the social media campaign surrounding the article was:

“Beyond the listings. Beyond real estate. Get to know the person behind the results.”

Because honestly, that captures what I care about most.

Helping people discover why this island is so special.

Sometimes that means helping someone buy or sell a home.

Other times it means recommending a hidden coffee shop, explaining the personality of different neighborhoods, supporting local nonprofits, or simply sharing moments that make Key West feel different from everywhere else.

Community Will Always Come First

The article also highlighted something that matters deeply to me: community involvement.

From being a Key West Ambassador, to serving as Service Chair for Sunrise Rotary, to being involved with the Key West Art & Historical Society, to supporting local businesses and events, I have always believed that being part of Key West means contributing to it.

That mindset influences everything I do.

Because real estate here is personal.

People are not just buying homes.

They are becoming part of a community.

Who You Work With Matters

The longer I spend in this industry, the more I believe this statement is true.

Key West real estate is unique. Flood zones, neighborhoods, architecture, history, insurance, lifestyle, and market timing all play a role in decisions here.

Anyone can become an agent, and many do it part time.

But understanding Key West goes much deeper than simply opening doors or writing contracts.

Who you work with matters.

Conclusion

Being featured in the Key West Citizen was genuinely an honor.

Not because of recognition, but because it gave me the opportunity to reflect on how much this island has shaped my life.

What started as a leap of faith during COVID turned into something far bigger than my wife and I ever expected.

A community.
A lifestyle.
A business built around relationships.
And a chance to help others discover why Key West feels so special.

And if you have followed along anywhere during that journey, thank you.

I truly appreciate it.
