The Longest Mountain Bike Trail in the World
The Eastern Divide Trail stretches from Newfoundland to Key West, covering nearly 6,000 miles of rugged terrain, forest climbs, muddy valleys, and weather-worn coastlines. It’s the longest off-road bikepacking route in the world, and on September 8, 2025,
Angus Young rolled into Key West to set a new Fastest Known Time (FKT): 39 days, 10 hours.
Sponsored by MASON Cycles, the British endurance cyclist tackled everything from oppressive Southern humidity to mechanical breakdowns that would’ve ended most riders’ journeys. Instead, Angus turned every challenge into fuel—fixing forks, wiring gear shifters, and stuffing burritos into jersey pockets along the way.
Highlights from the Trail
Mile 1,933 – Vermont Highs
After leaving Montpelier with burritos in his pockets and gravel roads ahead, Angus found himself grinning through the grind. Shirtless, sweat-stained, and dust-covered, he overheard two women remark, “He just looks like he is having the best time.” They were right—he was.
Mile 3,313 – West Virginia Lows (and Highs)
With broken forks, faulty shifting, and empty food supplies, West Virginia nearly broke him. But a stroke of luck at Woods Hole Hostel—bread, Amish cheese, and a stocked resupply closet—turned despair into joy. Sometimes endurance racing is about timing as much as pedaling.
Mile 5,794 – Florida Fixes
By Florida, his bike was barely hanging on. Stuck in a single gear for 100 miles, Angus improvised with a copper strip and pliers, coaxing life back into his drivetrain. Twelve hours later, the gears finally shifted. The joy was indescribable—and carried him all the way to Key West.
The Finish in Key West
Rolling into the Florida Keys after nearly six weeks of nonstop effort, Angus Young crossed the finish line at the Southernmost point of the Eastern Divide Trail. His time—39 days, 10 hours—stands as the new benchmark for endurance cyclists worldwide.
He credits the ride not just to his own resilience, but to those who built the trail, supported his journey, and cheered him on from afar: BIKEPACKING.com, Karlos Bernart, and his sponsors—MASON Cycles, Restrap, Hunt, Le Col, and Exposure Lights.

Why It Matters
Angus’s ride is more than a record. It’s a reminder of the joy and grit that comes from chasing big dreams—whether it’s surviving “death mud,” dodging wild dogs, or spinning through the Everglades in the middle of the night. His words say it best:
“It wasn’t without its challenges, but that was to be expected. Extended efforts elevate all emotions, and it’s the positive ones that will stick with me the most.”
