July in Key West: The Month Locals Secretly Love

Fireworks. Fresh Key Lime Pie. Hemingway. Lobsters. Mermaids. July might just be Key West's most underrated month.
Ted Stewart  |  July 2, 2026

Ask most people the best time to visit Key West and they'll probably say winter.

They're not wrong...

But they're definitely missing something.

As soon as July rolls around, the island changes. The snowbirds have headed north, parking gets a little easier, restaurant reservations aren't quite as impossible, and the locals start getting excited because some of our favorite traditions are just getting started.

The water is about as warm as it gets all year. Afternoon rain showers cool everything off just enough. Sunsets somehow become even more colorful.

And the event calendar?

It barely slows down.

Where else can you spend one weekend eating Key lime pie with your face, watch fireworks over the Atlantic, spot mermaids around town, and then finish the month chasing lobster?

Only Key West.

Whether you're planning your first visit or you've been coming here for years, here's everything happening this July.

🍋 July 1 through 5

Key Lime Festival

If Key West has an official flavor.. It's Key lime.

This festival has quickly become one of the biggest celebrations on the island and somehow gets better every year.

Expect five days filled with everything Key lime imaginable.

  • Highlights
  • Pie tastings
  • Cocktail competitions
  • Key Lime Pie Hop
  • Key Lime Bike Tours
  • Cooking demonstrations
  • Trivia nights
  • Special dinners
  • Live music
  • The World Famous Pie Eating Championship

🐓 KWT Tip

If you're planning to attend one of the specialty dinners or cocktail events, buy tickets early. They often sell out weeks before the festival begins.

Dates: July 1 through 5, 2026

🧜‍♀️ July 2 through 5

Key West Mermaid Festival

If you've never seen dozens of mermaids casually walking through Old Town...

Welcome to Key West.

One of the island's newest festivals has quickly become one of its most photographed.

You'll find professional mermaids, costume contests, beach activities, educational programs, conservation events, and plenty of opportunities for amazing photos.

  • It's whimsical.

It's family friendly.

And somehow...

It fits Key West perfectly.

Highlights

  • Mermaid meet and greets

  • Beach games

  • Pool parties

  • Ocean conservation talks

  • Costume contests

  • Live entertainment

  • Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center programs

🐓 KWT Tip

Even if you don't have kids, stop by. The creativity people put into their costumes is worth seeing, and the conservation message behind the festival makes it even better.

🇺🇸 July 3

America's 250th Birthday Cookout

There aren't many places more fitting to celebrate America's birthday than Harry S. Truman's Little White House.

Enjoy great food, patriotic entertainment, family activities, and one of the island's most historic settings.

It's a fun way to kick off Independence Day weekend.

🎆 July 4

Rotary's Annual Fourth of July Celebration

This is one of my favorite community events every year.

Grab a chair, bring the family, and head to Higgs Beach and White Street Pier.

You'll find food vendors, live music, local nonprofits, games, and one of the best fireworks shows anywhere in the Florida Keys.

🐓 KWT Tip

Go early.

Locals know parking disappears quickly.

Bonus points if you start the morning with the Rotary 5K.

🌇 July 4

Hugh's View Rooftop Celebration

Want fireworks without the beach crowd?

Hugh's View offers live music, cocktails, rooftop views, and a unique perspective of the fireworks over Key West.

Reservations are highly recommended.

🥧 July 4

World Famous Key Lime Pie Eating Championship

There are sporting events.

Then there's this.

Contestants attempt to eat an entire Key lime pie...

Without using their hands.

It's messy.

It's hilarious.

It's wonderfully ridiculous.

And honestly...

It's about as Key West as it gets.

⚾ July 11

Miami Marlins Key West Day

One of the coolest community traditions happens 150 miles north of the island.

Key West heads to Miami.

The Marlins celebrate our community.

Everyone wears island colors.

It's a fun excuse for a summer road trip.

🎣 July 22 through 25

Key West Marlin Tournament

Even if you've never picked up a fishing rod...

Go watch the boats return.

The docks come alive as anglers from around the world compete in one of the country's premier offshore tournaments.

  • Blue marlin.

  • White marlin.

  • Tuna.

  • Dolphin.

  • Wahoo.

It's impressive whether you're a fisherman or not.

✍️ July 22 through 26

Hemingway Days

This might be my favorite week of the summer.

The entire island celebrates Ernest Hemingway with literary events, fishing tournaments, museum tours, and the famous Look Alike Contest at Sloppy Joe's.

And yes...

The Running of the Bulls really does happen.

No actual bulls.

Just a lot of creativity and a whole lot of laughs.

You have to see it at least once.

🦞 July 29 through 30

Lobster Mini Season

These two days completely transform the Florida Keys.

  • Boat ramps are packed.

  • Marinas are buzzing.

  • Restaurants fill up.

  • Divers head offshore before sunrise.

Even if you're not diving, it's one of the most exciting weeks of the summer and one of the best times to enjoy fresh Florida lobster.

🐓 KWT Tip

If you're visiting this week, make dinner reservations early and expect extra boat traffic around the island.

🎭 More Events Throughout July

One thing I've learned living here...

If your calendar is empty in Key West, you're simply not looking hard enough.

You'll also find:

  • Live music every night

  • Theater performances

  • Gallery openings

  • Sunset sails

  • Harbor cruises

  • Fishing charters

  • Trivia nights

  • Farmers markets

  • Duval Street events

  • Community fundraisers

🌅 Every Evening

Mallory Square Sunset Celebration

If you only do one thing while you're here...

Make it sunset.

No two evenings are ever the same.

  • Street performers.

  • Artists.

  • Musicians.

  • Food vendors.

  • Amazing people watching.

  • And one incredible sunset after another.

I've watched hundreds...

I still stop whenever I can.

Final Thoughts

One of the reasons I love July is because it feels like Key West gets to be itself.

The pace slows down just enough, but the island never loses its energy. There is always another event to stumble across, another sunset worth watching, another restaurant to try, or another story waiting around the next corner.

If you're planning a visit this month, don't over schedule yourself. Pick a few events, leave room to wander, and let Key West surprise you. That's usually when the best memories happen.

And if you're thinking your visit might turn into something more permanent, I'd be happy to help you discover what living here is really like.

After all...

You Should Be Here. 🐓
